The Shadow of Durban

Along the coast of Durban, South Africa, shark nets have been installed for decades. Set up in the name of protecting people, these nets may have offered reassurance to some, yet on the other side they have trapped countless marine creatures, costing them their lives. This work begins from the subtle contradiction revealed between the function of “protection”and the reality of “sacrifice.” The gentle curves of the glass in the work echo nature’s flow as it moves in harmony on its own. But when that flow is forcibly captured or controlled, the once-smooth form twists, tears, and breaks. The red shapes left along the edges are traces of that human intervention. An intention to protect nature can, at times, deform or even destroy what it seeks to preserve. By following the grain of smooth glass and encountering red fragments along the way, this work asks what the many boundaries we have placed are truly protecting—and what is happening on the other side of those lines.
더반의 그물
남아프리카공화국 더반 해안에는 수십 년간 상어 그물이 쳐져 있다. 사람을 보호한다는 명목으로 설치된 이 그물은 누군가에게는 안심을 주었지만, 그 이면에서는 수많은 해양 생물이 걸려 본래의 생명을 잃기도 했다. 이 작업은 '보호'라는 기능과 '희생'이라는 현상이 빚어낸 묘한 괴리에서 시작된다. 작품 속 유리의 부드러운 곡선은 스스로 조화롭게 흘러가는 자연의 흐름을 닮아 있다. 하지만 그 흐름을 억지로 붙잡거나 통제하려 할 때, 매끄러웠던 모양은 뒤틀리고 찢겨 나간다. 모서리에 남은 붉은 형상들은 바로 그 인위적인 개입이 만들어낸 흔적이다. 자연을 지키겠다는 의도가 때로는 본래의 모습을 변하게 하거나 깨뜨리기도 한다. 이 작업은 매끄러운 유리의 결을 따라가다 마주하게 되는 붉은 파편을 통해, 우리가 그어 놓은 수많은 경계가 과연 무엇을 지키고 있는지, 그 경계면에서 어떤 일이 일어나고 있는지 묻고자 한다.
